Gian Marco Benedetto was born in 1986 in Sarzana, Italy. He currently lives in Barcelona. He self-taught since he was 13 years old, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Bocconi University of Milan, after studying photography at the Forma institute (Milan) after specializing in new journalism (Lacoonte) he studied photojournalism and documentary photography (IEFC, Barcelona). Since 2017 he has been affiliated as an International Journalist. Benedetto feels the urgency to tell stories focused on people who perceive themselves as powerless losers in the modern world and uses different audiovisual media to share his questions about identity and human rights. He spent the last five years covering events in Turkey, Mexico and Europe reporting from Istanbul after Gazi Park on conscientious objectors to conscription – from Europe, during the humanitarian emergency on migration – from south of Mexico’s border with Guatemala. and Chiapas after the Donald Trump wall, in Catalonia during the referendum for the Republic and the process of independence from Spain and the Covid.
His beginnings as a professional photographer are linked to the North American agency Polaris Images, he has collaborated with other international agencies and magazines and newspapers such as Abc news, L’Espresso, El País, La Vanguardia, Europa press, El Faro de Vigo, Expansión, El Periódico, La Razón among others. Benedetto’s images have been exhibited, with individual and group exhibitions, in different spaces in Spain and around the world. In 2020 he participated in the International Photography Biennial (Olot) and was selected for the final stage of the Siena International Photo Awards 2020 contest (Italy) and for the PX32020 exhibition in Paris with his work “Ni rei ni por” selected as winner of the 2020 SOTW curatorial selection award. He has participated as a student and professional in other events such as Lumix Festival(Hannover), Terra Gollut film festival, Strip Art (Barcelona), among others.
