Helena Velez Olabarria
Born in Arraste, Euskal Herria, in 1980. Graduated in fine arts from the EHU/UPV (University of the Basque Country), with postgraduate work at the Lahden ammattikorkeakoulu (Lahti University of Applied Science) in Finland. Design, painting, printing techniques, exceptional places and people led her unconsciously to photography more than a decade ago.
She has specialized in applied photography at the Escola Superior d’Imatge i Disseny (Idep Barcelona) and earned a master’s degree in architecture, art, and ephemeral space at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (Universitat Politècnica Catalunya), deepening her knowledge of both ephemeral architecture and exhibition design. The relation between the ephemeral and the photographic act constitutes the guiding thread of her master’s thesis. Assistant and studio coordinator of Jordi Bernadó in 2011–2011, she has also worked as an architectural photographer and construction monitor. She has collaborated on projects of other photographers while experimenting and slowly developing her own body of work. In 2009 she joined Photographic Social Vision, where she is currently in charge of the Projects section.
